Emergency Grants

Overview

For many young adults, the first years of independent living may come with financial hiccups. A bill, a gap in employment, or an urgent repair can be difficult to manage before savings and a financial safety net have been established. For young people who have aged out of foster care, these challenges can be especially difficult without family or other adults to turn to for help. Even those who have worked hard to build stable lives may be living close to the edge, with little room in their budgets for an unplanned expense. A short-term setback can quickly threaten housing, interrupt education or employment, or derail progress toward other goals.

City Living NY provides emergency grants to participants across our programs. This timely assistance helps young people address urgent needs and move forward.

What Support Includes

Emergency grants help address a wide range of needs, including:

  • Housing: Rent arrears and move-in expenses, such as broker fees and security deposits.
  • Food and parenting: Groceries and essential supplies such as diapers and formula.
  • Utilities and communication: Heat, electricity, Wi-Fi, and phone bills.
  • Employment: Uniforms, MetroCards, and vocational program fees.
  • Education: Tuition arrears, laptops, books, and school supplies.

By responding quickly when a need arises, City Living NY helps young people address immediate challenges and maintain the stability they have worked hard to build.
