Parenting Support
Quick Links
Overview
At any given time, approximately one-third of the young people City Living NY serves are parents. Research shows that youth who have experienced foster care are more likely than their peers to become parents early in adulthood. For many, the hope of building close, lasting relationships is part of that journey. Yet taking on the responsibilities of parenting without a dependable support network can feel overwhelming and isolating.
City Living NY’s Parenting Program offers practical help, individualized guidance, and opportunities for parents and children to spend time with others. We support participants as they build safe, stable homes and pursue their own goals.
What Support Includes
Our social workers connect participants with resources during pregnancy and help them prepare for their baby’s arrival. We provide appropriate furniture and household goods for infants and children. When urgent needs arise, we can help with diapers, wipes, formula, and groceries. Social workers also help parents address questions about their children’s education and connect families with early intervention services when appropriate.
Child care can be essential for a parent who is working or looking for a job. We help participants find child care and figure out how to pay for it, including identifying benefits and other available resources.
When a family becomes involved with child protective services, our social workers help the parent understand the process, access resources, and advocate for their family. We also support participants seeking custody of siblings or other relatives who are in foster care.
We create occasions for parents and children to celebrate and connect. Families are welcome at the City Living NY office, where they can spend time with others. We celebrate Mother’s Day, host a Thanksgiving gathering for families, arrange photo sessions, and provide holiday gifts for children.
City Living NY also offers a Parenting Journey group led by social workers trained in the curriculum. The group gives parents space to reflect on how they were raised, consider how those experiences shape their own parenting, and develop ways to care for themselves. Through conversation with other parents, they can share experiences and build supportive relationships.

Housing Support
Stable housing is the foundation for long-term success. City Living NY helps young adults aging out of foster care find, secure, and maintain safe, affordable housing. We also provide furniture and household essentials that help turn an empty apartment into a comfortable home.
Education Support
Education can open doors to stable careers and greater independence. We help participants explore academic programs, apply for financial aid, and find tutoring and other resources. From the first application through graduation, we offer practical support and encouragement.
